Karen O of of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs has recorded a spine-tingling cover of Willie Nelson’s cautionary tale / unsolicited parenting advice: Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.
It’s a beautiful version, and her voice hangs like a benevolent moon in the glittering sonic firmament and oh yeah, it’s also an advert for a Mexican Restaurant.
I’m sure there’ll be folks out there that have a problem with that. “Selling out” and whatever. Fine. The way I see it: if you’ve never downloaded a piece of music with out paying the artist for it, you’re entitled to your high ground. It must be pretty lonely up there. But if you have ever missed an opportunity to pay an artist for a piece of music, then it’s pretty rich to criticise them when they look for other ways to keep themselves in smokes and skinny jeans.
Right i’ll leave you with this. It’s another advert featuring Karen O with a beautiful soundtrack, so if you don’t agree with that sort of thing, you are morally obligated to not press play.
One final thought, this is directed by Spike Jonze, but that’s ok coz for some reason film directors don’t catch nearly as much heat for doing commercials.
